#SOL20 Things I’ve Grown to Appreciate During Covid-19

In my head I’ve reflected about what I’ve been learning during this Covid-19 time, but I think it’s about time that I started to write them down before I quickly forget. There have definitely been highs and lows during Covid-19 and distance learning was not easy. (We are going back to the classroom in about two weeks.)

One of the things I’ve appreciated about this time though is being able to reconnect with friends and family in a more intentional way. At times, I do feel like I’m in touch more often with my family and friends back home in the States. I’m being more intentional in reaching out more consistently as the situation continues to change all around the world.

Living overseas during this time has made me appreciate more the times I got to go back home to see my friends and family as this summer. I wasn’t able to travel due to Covid-19 restrictions. This is the first time in my 12 years teaching overseas that I was unable to go back home for the summer. Also, I’ve definitely grown to appreciate even more traveling as I think chances of getting on a plane anytime this year looks pretty slim.

Another thing I’ve grown to appreciate were the relationships with my students through distance learning. I think that when you go through such a challenging time you do grow closer and develop deeper bonds. We did spend a lot of time of building those relationships, resiliency, and sharing our lives during distance learning. It was encouraging to see my students rise up and stay resilient through the challenges we faced of staying at home for such a long time. I saw students have time to spend on their interests and develop skills that they might have normally not have the time to focus on. I was so touched when my students secretly made me a video thanking me individually and shared it with me on the last day. I never had a class do that for me in all of my years of teaching.

What have you grown to appreciate during this time? What are you thankful for?

I wrote a similar post today in that it considered what I noticed during the pandemic that I might not have noticed had we not had it. I love your sweet class for making a video for you at the end of the year. You sound like you are very invested in your students and their well being. Thank you for being a caring person. I’ve also been able to do some reevaluation of connections with friends and family during this time. It’s important to know who/what is important and who/what is not. I have gained insight on this during the pandemic. Thanks for sharing.

    Jee Young,
What a lovely post. It is so good to live a life a gratitude, and I see your heart of thankfulness here. That secret video was a beautiful surprise!
During this time, I’ve come to appreciate the slow pace life can have. I have looked forward to time in the kitchen, cutting vegetables, planning delicious meals and eating healthy.

    Thanks,
    Denise
P.S. I’m also grateful today for the time you sent chocolates to my Iowa genius hour students so many years ago!
